Basic safety training – STCW A-VI/1
During the Basic Safety Training course you will learn how to act in different emergency situations on board the ship. The course is divided into 4 modules.
- Survival at sea in case of abandonment of the ship STCW A-VI/1-1
- Prevention and fight against fires STCW A-VI/1-2
- Minimum standards in first aid STCW A-VI/1-3
- Safety at work and social responsibilities A-VI/1-4
Theoretical and practical face-to-face training where you will learn about emergency situations on board and prepare you to respond, immediately applying the procedures and actions that minimize possible dangers related with firefighting, rescue, survival and prevention of accidents on board.
The training is given in Spanish.

The course taught by Escola Port is approved by the DGMM and complies with the STCW10 Manila amendments. This certificate is mandatory to be able to work on a sea-going vessel.

I did the Maritime Basic Safety Training at Escola Port, and it was genuinely a great experience. The course lasted two weeks in total (weekends included) with practical sessions. I chose to do the course in the evening, so I was able to combine it with my work. The theoretical sessions took place in the classroom, while the practical sessions were outside. Overall, the content of the course was much based on real-life situations, which I think is very valuable. So once we learned about the theory of the content we then on the weekends and sometimes during the week as well were able to put the theoretical part learned in class into practice. This combination of theory and practice really ensured and reaffirmed to me the things I was learning. In my opinion, our classes were so unique thanks to the professionalism and passion the teachers have. Throughout the course, we were confronted with different scenarios (fire fighting, abandonment of a ship, saving someone at risk), and we practiced how to approach such situations correctly. And again, thanks to the passion of the teachers in and outside the classroom and even when we were confronted with difficult situations, there was always a lot of motivation present. Overall, the atmosphere the teachers created was what made this course an exceptional experience. We had different teachers with different backgrounds and experiences, which I thought was very positive as it enabled us to gain great insights into the different sectors the material of the course is connected to. So overall, I was positively surprised by the professionalism, passion and in general the way the school teaches and cooperates. Escola Port showed me that they genuinely care about the learning outcome of their students. I would recommend the courses at Escola Port really to everyone who has the opportunity to do so.
