Short-range radio operator training

Three independent 4-hour sessions.

  • ROCK – 1 → In-person or streaming theoretical class – 4 hours.
  • ROCK – 2 and 3 → In-person practice with simulators – 8 hours.

You will learn to operate the on-board radio, portable VHF equipment, locating beacons and other radio communications and radio electronic equipment to aid navigation. How to carry out distress, urgency and security communications, and much more.

Method and structure of the PER radio operator practices

  • Classroom practices with simulators.
  • Groups of up to 8 participants.
  • Every month of the year in the Port Olímpic of Barcelona.
  • Three independent sessions of 4 hours each.
  • During the week or weekend.
  • They must be done in order, that is, you will not be able to do the “Radio Operator 2” practice if you have not completed “Radio Operator 1”.
  • The first session, Radio Operator 1, is theoretical training.

Agenda of the PER radio operator practices

The distribution of the total internship time would be divided into four sections:

  • General knowledge of radiocommunications in the Maritime Mobile Service.
  • Use the radio equipment of a ship.
  • Practical use of equipment.
  • Purpose and use of digital selective calling.
  • Use of GMDSS subsystems and equipment.
  • Procedures with and without DSC for distress, urgency and security communications.
  • MSI: Maritime Safety Information – in the GMDSS.
  • Cancel false alarms.
  • Regulations, procedures and mandatory practices.
  • Use of the international phonetic alphabet. IMO standard phrases.

    The instructors are patient. There is a lot of material but it is quite well organized, especially the online review opportunities. The technological support, especially the simulation software and electronic whiteboard are very good. Also the paper supports and the online syllabus.
